Hesketh Golf Club

Hesketh Golf Club, founded in 1885, proudly stands as Southport’s oldest golf club. Designed by George Lowe and the legendary James Braid, Hesketh holds a unique place in English golf history as the birthplace of the English Golf Union.

Historic Significance

The club houses the remarkable ‘Hitler Trophy’ from the 1936 Berlin Olympics, won by member Arnold Bentley. This piece of sporting history, along with the EGU founding, cements Hesketh’s importance in golf heritage. Champions including Henry Cotton have graced these fairways.

The Course

Hesketh uniquely blends links and parkland characteristics through mature sand dunes. Half the holes weave through traditional dunes while the remainder run alongside the Ribble Estuary. The dramatic closing stretch from the 14th to 18th, framed by the magnificent 1902 clubhouse standing alone on a tall sand dune, provides a memorable finish. The course borders a renowned nature reserve and regularly serves as Open Championship Regional Qualifying.
