About Wallasey Golf Club

Wallasey Golf Club, founded in 1891 on the Wirral Peninsula, holds a unique place in golf history as the birthplace of the Stableford scoring system.

Old Tom Morris Design

The legendary Old Tom Morris designed the original 18 holes in 1891 for members of nearby Royal Liverpool who sought another links course on the Wirral. The course was later enhanced by Open Champion Alex Herd in 1901, and in 1913 Harold Hilton introduced a par-3 that Bobby Jones and James Braid praised as one of the world’s finest short holes.

Birthplace of Stableford

Dr. Frank Stableford devised his revolutionary points scoring system here, with the first Stableford competition held in 1932. This innovation forever changed how millions of golfers play the game worldwide.

The Links Challenge

Spanning 6,649 yards (par 72), Wallasey presents a classic links examination with undulating fairways through natural dunes, strategic bunkering, and firm, fast conditions rewarding the ground game—all set against spectacular views across Liverpool Bay to the Welsh mountains.

Course History

Bobby Jones at Wallasey

Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones Jr. remains one of golf's most revered figures, and his connection to Wallasey Golf Club adds another distinguished chapter to this historic links' storied past. The legendary American amateur, who achieved the unprecedented "Grand Slam" in 1930 by winning all four major championships in a single year, developed a deep appreciation for the traditional links courses of England's Golf Coast during his competitive visits to Britain.

Jones first encountered Wallasey during the 1921 British Amateur Championship, where he competed as a 19-year-old prodigy already marked for greatness. The young Georgian was captivated by the course's authentic links character and the ingenuity of its design. He was particularly impressed by the par-3 hole introduced by Harold Hilton in 1913, which Jones later described alongside James Braid as one of the finest short holes in world golf—high praise from a man who had played the greatest courses on both sides of the Atlantic.

What distinguished Jones was not merely his extraordinary talent but his genuine respect for golf's traditions and the courses that embodied them. Wallasey, with its Old Tom Morris pedigree and its role as birthplace of the Stableford system, represented exactly the kind of historic venue Jones treasured. His visits helped cement the club's reputation among American golfers and contributed to the transatlantic appreciation for England's northwestern links that continues to this day. The legacy of Bobby Jones at Wallasey serves as a reminder that the game's greatest champions have long recognised the special qualities of this remarkable corner of English golf.
