About Royal Liverpool
Royal Liverpool Golf Club, known as Hoylake, is the second oldest seaside links in England. Founded in 1869, the club received Royal designation just two years later. George Morris, brother of Old Tom, originally laid out a 9-hole course on a racecourse site—uniquely serving both golf and horse racing for seven years.
Open Championship Legacy
The Open has been played 13 times at Royal Liverpool, with notable victories including Tiger Woods (2006), Rory McIlroy (2014), and most recently in 2023. The 1897 Open was won by Hoylake’s own Harold Hilton, an amateur who beat James Braid by one shot.
The Course
Royal Liverpool offers a pure test of seaside links golf. Only six holes run through the dunes, leaving little protection from the ever-changing Hoylake wind. Recent updates for the 2023 Open included a new par-3 17th hole, ensuring the course remains a challenging test for championship golf where the ground game is as important as the aerial approach.
